What is the Doctoral Consortium at IMX 2025?

IMX’s Doctoral Consortium (‘the DC’) is a part of the IMX 2025 conference in Brazil. The Doctoral Consortium is aimed for people enrolled in a PhD program in fields relevant to the themes of IMX. If you are a doctoral candidate who has read or referenced works presented at IMX in the past, or if the scope of IMX makes you feel that this is a community that you would benefit from being part of and for which you believe you can contribute, then we encourage you to apply to join us in Rio de Janeiro.
The DC is a forum for you to share your work and ideas with fellow PhD students and more experienced researchers in the field. You will get the chance to present your work (research results or work in progress), get feedback and suggestions, and participate in practical group activities that will help you support each other with ideas for research approaches and on how to exploit your PhD experience at its best. Candidates accepted to the Doctoral Consortium will be invited to attend the full IMX 2025 conference, the world’s leading international research conference on interactive media and user research.
IMX is an inclusive, growing, interdisciplinary community, so if you are not sure whether the specifics of your research are in the scope of the DC you can email dc@imx.acm.org and the DC chairs will do our best to advise you.
The best time to join a Doctoral Consortium is midway through your PhD -after defining your research questions but with at least a year before submitting your thesis. This allows to maximize feedback and guidance.

How to take part?

Take part in the IMX DC by submitting a paper up to 6 pages long (including references). The paper should be in the New SIGCHI Proceedings Format. They should be well organised and structured in a way that demonstrates the links between the concepts presented. Your paper should clearly specify:
A real world problem that relates to and motivates the PhD

  • The concrete research question(s) that the (proposed) PhD is addressing and how this fits into the bigger picture of other research that addresses the real world problem
  • The aims, objectives and scope of the research
  • The methods used to achieve the objectives and the proposed solution(s), including a brief description of work done so far (including your first results if available) and a tentative plan for future work
  • The main contribution(s) of the research to interactive media experiences and justification why the contribution will lead to a PhD.

At the Conference

If your paper is selected for the DC, you will join a group of fellow doctoral students in Brazil. You will be able to present and share your research in progress with the DC chairs, and other experts in the field in a fun and inclusive environment.

Once the main IMX conference is underway, you will be asked to give a pitch version of your talk to the full IMX 2025 community in a plenary session and participate in the whole conference.

After the Conference

Your paper will be published in the IMX 2025 Adjunct Proceedings.
