This year, as in years past, we have been working hard to provide as much travel support to as many conference attendees as possible. IMX 2022 will be carrying out a number of initiatives to support diversity and inclusion in addition to student participation.
Gary Marsden Travel Awards (GMTA)
GMTA supports undergraduate and graduate students, as well as early-career researchers (i.e., those who are ≤ 5 years post-graduation) in attending SIGCHI supported conferences, events, and (for early-career researchers) mentorship meetings. First-time presenters, researchers/ presenters suffering from financial hardship or lacking institutional support are prioritized for these awards.
Details about the award and the procedure is available here: https://sigchi.org/awards/gary-marsden-travel-awards/

Travel support for (non-student) participants who self-identify as marginalized and/or underrepresented in the IMX community
One of our goals for this IMX edition is to broaden the community by welcoming a more diverse pool of researchers. In particular, we want to support the participation of researchers who self-identify as marginalized and/or underrepresented in the community (e.g., scholars who come from non-WEIRD – Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Developed – societies) and who lack other funding opportunities to support their participation.
We believe this grant is particularly important to increase participation of scholars from these underrepresented groups. We also believe that it can trigger future research collaborations and lead to increased involvement of underrepresented attendees also in future editions of the conference. This support is particularly targeting earlier-stage researchers (e.g., post-docs, researchers) and applicants with a need for financial support. Students are not eligible as their applications will be centrally handled by SIGMM.
Awards (about 15-20) of up to $2,000 will be provided, with the exact value depending on the geographical areas (to maximize our reach), diversity (to improve inclusion), topics (to expand into new areas) and submissions to the special sessions/workshops.
Applications are open between April 20, 2022 to May 20, 2022.
