Open Call: Student Assistant to the ACM IMX Steering Committee

The Steering Committee (SC) of the ACM International Conference on Interactive Media Experiences (IMX) is looking for an enthusiastic PhD student or early-career researcher to join us as Student Assistant to the Steering Committee

This is a fantastic opportunity to get involved in the running of an international ACM conference, gain insight into academic community building, and develop your professional network — all while making a real contribution to a welcoming and growing research community.

About IMX

ACM IMX is the leading international conference for research into interactive media experiences, bringing together an interdisciplinary community spanning human-computer interaction, multimedia engineering, media design, media studies, and media psychology. The conference is sponsored by ACM SIGCHI, in cooperation with SIGMM and SIGWEB. You can learn more at imx.acm.org

What Does the Role Involve?

The Student Assistant supports the Steering Committee with a range of administrative and communications tasks. These are typically lightweight but important activities that keep the conference community running smoothly. Examples include:

  • Maintaining and updating the IMX Steering Committee website
  • Helping to archive and organise conference materials and documentation
  • Assisting with communications, such as social media and community announcements
  • Supporting the preparation of meeting agendas and minutes
  • Helping coordinate calls for hosts, open calls, and other SC activities

The time commitment is modest — typically a few hours per month, with occasional busier periods around the conference itself.

What’s In It for You?

  • A behind-the-scenes view of how an international ACM conference is organised and governed
  • Direct interaction with senior researchers and practitioners in the interactive media community
  • Experience in academic service and conference administration — valuable for your CV and career development
  • An opportunity to get involved in the organisation of IMX and participate in SC meetings
  • A named role that recognises your contribution to the community

Who Are We Looking For?

We welcome applications from current PhD students or early-career researchers (e.g. recent graduates, postdocs) who:

  • Have an interest in interactive media experiences or a related research area
  • Are comfortable with basic web editing and digital communication tools
  • Are reliable, organised, and happy to work independently on small tasks
  • Want to become more involved in the IMX community

Prior attendance at IMX is welcome but not required — we’re keen to hear from people who are new to the community too.

How to Apply

Please send a short expression of interest (no more than half a page) to imx-sc@imx.acm.org including:

  1. Your name, affiliation, and stage of study or career
  1. A brief note on why you’re interested in the role and what you’d bring to it
  1. Any relevant experience (e.g. web skills, social media, event support — but don’t worry if this is limited)

Timeline

Applications are rolling.
